Friday's Favorites~ Little House Books

Do you recognize this picture? I think you will if you looked at Kelli's post today. When I was growing up I read through all of the Little House books time and time again. Now I'm thoroughly enjoying introducing the Ingalls family to my children. We started using the series for our afternoon read-aloud time at the beginning of the summer. We're almost through with book #2, Little House on the Prairie.

I picked up the first two books in the series at a yard sale a few months ago, but I've been planning on using the public library to check out the rest of the books as we get to them. Of course, you can only keep a borrowed book for so long, and I'm not quite sure that we'd be finished with each one by its due date. So, I was absolutely thrilled when I stumbled upon this entire boxed set at an antique store recently. I snatched it up and quickly headed to the sales desk. The price wasn't bad, and the set was in pretty good condition. I think it must have just been on someone's bookshelf for the past 35 years, because the pages don't even look used. I asked the sales clerk if the price on the box was the best she could do, even though I was inwardly very happy to pay the price on the box. She said that she could take off 10%. Whoo-hoo!

Now we'll be able to enjoy taking our time reading through the series, and my kids can develop a special bond with Laura, too.

Before you head off for more Show and Tell, let me know which of these books is your favorite. :)

It's great that you found the whole set together. It's been so long since I read them. I remember enjoying every one but for some reason The Long Winter or maybe one that has Plum Creek in the title. Oh the mind is a terrible thing to lose :)
blessings...

I love little house books, and in a way, reading them as a child has deeply influenced how we live now as a family. The Long Winter is by far my favorite and I faithfully read it each winter, sitting by our woodstove that is our only heat and counting my blessings that we have wood and food.

I read these books to my children and now they read them to theirs....
My fave? How can one choose? That's like picking your favorite child.
:o)
Okay...I'll say...Little House in the Big Woods...

Great find! I love the series. My set is currently on loan to my 11 year old niece. I can't wait to share it with my own daughter!

Yes--our family has so enjoyed those books also--and I agree--its nice to have your own copy to read as slowly as you want and to reread as often as you want. They become part of family memories.

We are doing the Prairie Primer so of course we recognized the picture. I think Plum Creek is my all time favorite. Charlotte likes The Big Woods and Zach of course loves The Farmer Boy.

We LOVE these books. I read them over and over as a little girl although I didn't own a set. My oldest daughter never got into them although I read the Little House in the Big Woods to her when she was 5. My youngest LOVES them and owns the whole set thanks to grandma. Her favorite is The Long Winter. My favorite is On the Banks of Plum Creek. Happy reading!

I have always loved those books and am looking forward to reading them to my girls.

What a great find! I read my sister's set so I'm keeping my eye out for our own set.

I've read through them at least once, maybe twice, and would love to do so again. We have a boxed set like that, only blue instead of yellow. It's so neat you found them and are able to share them with your children!

I've always enjoyed the Little House books, and really anything about or by Laura Ingalls Wilder! My favorite of the books is The First Four Years, because it was the beginning of her married life, and even as a little girl, I had that romantic streak that loved marriage and making a home of my own! ;) So glad you found a full set!

I love Little House. All but The Long Winter. It was really loooooooooong.

I read that series to my boys one year as our history/literature unit. We did all kinds of things to supplement it, like make their kind of food, go without electricity, stuff like that. It was the best fun.

I remember when my mom read those books to my younger sister and I used to hide outside her bedroom door and listen. I thought they were girl books at the time, but they were actually very interesting! I really liked the first one (Little House in the Big Woods?)

I've been on the lookout for a set for our home library too! How blessed you are to have gotten them.

I think my sister, Jungle Mom, had this series once. I will check with her on that and see if she still owns them. Love these stories and the lessons they teach.

I definitely recognize them, Mrs. C!! I'm so excited that you found the series, I have read the books over and over again too!

Hugs,
Kelli

I love the Little House books! I have a small collection of the hard covered ones that my MIL has given my girls. Maybe one day I will finish the collection.

Thanks for sharing your great find with us!

OOOOOHHH, how thrilling, you got the whole collection!!!! I am almost green with envy!

I loved to watch "Little House on the Prairie" on TV when I was younger. I really would LOVE to watch it again now or read the bookds (in English rather than in German). Lots of childhood memories!

Happy reading! ;-))

Best wishes from Germany,
Anita

How wonderful, Mrs. C! What a great find :~) I need to start thinking about books to read aloud to Caleb (and any brothers/sisters the Lord might give him in the future). Enjoy your story time!

What a neat find. My mom read these books over and over to me. I was so "into" these books that I sewed myself a dress like Laura's; and a sun bonnet to match of course!

My favorite books were Little House in the Big Woods and On The Banks of Sugar Plum Creek. I can't remember the title, but it was on the Banks something. That is where they lived in the dug out house, and ma made Laua give her beloved Charlotte to someone.

I am ashamed to say that I have NEVER read these!!!
We plan on starting these soon... YEAH! I am really excited!
(Living out my childhood through the girls, again... LOL)

Oh me that brings back memories. I once had the series of Little House in the Big Woods and Little House on the prairie books. I am not sure what happened to them. But somewhere along the way they got lost or something. I would have loved to still have them to reread and to pass on to my girls.
